RIP Jane Russell

The actress, whose career was launched by Howard Hughes and his film "The Outlaw," was 89.

Jane Russell, whose voluptuous good looks won the attention of Howard Hughes and launched her on a movie career, has died. She was 89.

Generally cast in fluff films like 1943’s The Outlaw that showed off her well-endowed beauty, Russell reached the pinnacle of her career with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), starring in the comedy with Marilyn Monroe.

During the 1970s, Russell was widely recognized as the spokesperson for Playtex bras, appearing in national TV commercials for the “Cross Your Heart” bra campaign.

Although best known for her figure, Russell showed a comic sensibility in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and again with Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955) and The Revolt of Mamie Stover (1956). Nevertheless, most of her movie roles were designed around her towering physicality and frontal amplitude. Soft-spoken and well-regarded, Russell received the Women’s International Center Living Legacy Award in 1989.

STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies - #69

This week Steve presents Singing in the Rain. This is another one of those old MGM musicals that my mother loved and would never miss it when it was on TV. With Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds you know it is going to be great but to me the stars that really shine are Donald O'Connor and Jean Hagen. One of my favorite things to say is "I can't stand him" a'la Lina Lamont.
I have to admit, I had no Idea that the singing voice of Lina Lamont is not Debbie Reynolds but actually Jean Hagen. We can all learn something new from the Tired Old Queen.

I recently showed my boyfriend the clip of Lina Lamont getting her diction lesson from Phoebe Dinsmore and he thought that she looked like my old drag persona Bethany Holmes. What are your thoughts?

Carol Burnett, Mel Torme', Soupy Sales - MILDRED FIERCE!

Currently Watching - "AMADEUS"

I always love February because TCM runs Oscar winning movies. Tonight is Amadeus, which I have not seen in years. F Murray Abraham totally stole this show. He is amazing as old Salieri.
The thing I always think when I see this movie is 'OMG Mozart was a total ass' but then you hear the music and all is forgiven.

US gay marriage ban: US government drops defence of law

WOW!!!
The US government says it will no longer defend in the courts a law banning federal recognition of same-sex marriages approved by states.
US Attorney General Eric Holder said President Barack Obama had found the Defense of Marriage Act (Doma) unconstitutional.
The 1996 law defines marriage as "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife".
Five states and Washington DC allow same-sex marriages.
'Unnecessary and unfair' Previously, the US had defended the law in challenges of its constitutionality. US President Barack Obama had said he supported only same-sex civil unions, though in December he acknowledged his position was "evolving".
White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Wednesday Mr Obama believed Doma was "unnecessary and unfair", but was still "grappling" with his personal views on gay marriage.
In the US, marriage comes under the purview of state law, and Doma, passed under former President Bill Clinton, states that no state or other jurisdiction of the US shall be required to recognise a same-sex marriage approved elsewhere.
The law also requires the federal government to interpret the legal concept of marriage only as a legal union between a man and a woman.
A spokesman to Republican House Speaker John Boehner said Mr Obama should instead be focusing on job creation and budget cuts.
"The president will have to explain why he thinks now is the appropriate time to stir up a controversial issue that sharply divides the nation," said Michael Steel.
In a letter to Mr Boehner and other Congressional leaders on Wednesday, Mr Holder said the Obama administration would not defend the law in two current court challenges brought by same-sex couples.
He said the president, a constitutional lawyer, had deemed the law violated the equal protection provisions of the US constitution.
But Mr Holder said the administration would continue to enforce parts the law requiring government agencies to interpret marriage as only a union between a man and a woman until the law was ruled unconstitutional by a court.

Tyche, Giant Hidden Planet, May Exist In Our Solar System

We may have lost Pluto, but it looks like we might be getting Tyche.
Scientists may soon be able to prove the existence of the gas giant, which could be four times the size of Jupiter, according to astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The two first proposed Tyche's existence in order to explain a change in path of comets entering the solar system, according to The Independent.
From the The Independent:
Tyche will almost certainly be made up mostly of hydrogen and helium and will probably have an atmosphere much like Jupiter's, with colourful spots and bands and clouds, Professor Whitmire said. "You'd also expect it to have moons. All the outer planets have them," he added.
For a graphical representation of Tyche, click here.
So how could we have missed such a massive planet in our own solar system?
Well, it's 15,000 times further from the sun than Earth, according to Gizmodo. Tyche (if it does exist) lies in the Oort cloud, the outer shell of asteroids in our solar system.
Despite what the scientists believe they will find in the data (which will be released in April and was collected by NASA Wise space telescope), there is at least one flaw in their theory. Theoretically, a planet of Tyche's size should seriously disturb comets in the inner Oort Cloud, but that effect is yet to have been observed, according to The Independent.

Betty Garrett, Comic Actress, Dies at 91

Another one of my favorite actresses has left us.
Betty Garrett, the brassy comic actress who played Frank Sinatra’s ardent, taxi-driving pursuer in the movie “On the Town,” Archie Bunker’s liberal foil of a neighbor in “All in the Family” and a sardonic landlady in “Laverne & Shirley,” died on Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 91.
The cause was an aortic aneurysm, her son Andrew Parks said.
In a career covering more than six decades, Ms. Garrett was seen in everything from theatrical revues to nightclubs to television sitcoms, but she most beguiled film audiences in a number of standout supporting roles in the popular MGM musicals of the late 1940s

Excuse me: if whoever was in this house is still in the house, I'd like you to know that I've just called the police. I'd also like to add that I've got my father's gun and a *scorching* case of herpes.

I had no idea!!!!
Jeffrey Jones is best remember for his role as Principal Rooney in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
Jeffrey Jones failed to updated his registration as a sex offender in California. Jeffrey Jones, now 63 years old, was ordered in 2003 to register as a sex offender after pleading no contest to a felony charge.
Jones had been persuading a 14 year old boy to take nude pictures for him in his Hollywood home. Jones was supposed to update his state records recently but never appeared.

Weho Daily » City Council Votes 3 to 2 For Outdoor Smoking Ban

As a non smoker I really kind of love this. I hate smelling other people's smoke. But, as a rational free thinking American citizen I just don't think this is right. It is really going too far. If anything I believe that smoking should be illegal because of the health risk not just because it bothers people.

The West Hollywood City Council voted 3 to 2 on Monday night in favor of an outdoor smoking ban. One more vote is required and will occur on February 22 for the ordinance to be enacted. If it passes, it would take effect in January of 2012.
Councilmember Lindsey Horvath joined the most vocal opponent of the ban, John Duran, in voting against the measure. Until recently, Duran was the lone opponent of the ban on the Council.
Efforts by opponents to stop the ordinance will now focus on shifting the position of Councilmember Jeff Prang. The other two members of the Council, Mayor John Hielman and Councilmember Abbe Land, are putting the ordinance forward.

Google wishes Jules Verne happy 183rd birthday

This is so fun! Check it out while you can.
Google Doodle — a redesigned version of the Google home page logo — is the highest birthday honor the search engine can bestow, and today it goes to Jules Verne. In fact, the father of science fiction's 183rd birthday is being marked with one of the most interactive and elaborate Google Doodles yet.
It's not only delightfully whimsical and beautifully designed, but it also has a little secret: It lets you navigate down 20,000 leagues under the sea. All you have to do is drag a lever with your mouse, tap your arrow keys, or  — if you're viewing the site on an iPad, iPhone, or a laptop with a built-in accelerometer —  tilt the screen.
Fun, isn't it? Just watch out for that giant squid!

TORN

This never fails to crack me up.

Too much negativity!

My boyfriend Bart and I were out enjoying some of the sights around Dallas at about the same time that the Super Bowl started. As we were driving around Bart's phone started buzzing like crazy. People were tweeting and posting to Facebook about Christina Aguilera totally trashing the National Anthem. We finally got home around halftime and by then everyone was so busy bitching about the Black Eyed Peas that I had forgotten all about Christina till I got on Blogger and was treated to the following clip. From all the buzz about it I really expected it to be bad but all she really did was mess up one line. Can you imagine how nerve wracking it must be to sing such an iconic song at such a huge event. Truth be told most people would rather send out harsh words than positive energy. Most of the post I read seem to be so negative. I find that sad. I would like to take this time to congratulate both teams for a well played game, all the entertainment for sharing their talents and thank the Dallas/Fort Worth area for doing a great job even in the grips of one of the worst deep freezes the area has seen in years. Great job everyone!

They can joke, but frankly, I think all baseball uniforms should be this tight. I might watch the game more often! WOOF!

Taking some great SB pics

Super Bowl Sunday

The day has finally arrived. After a year of preparation, some of the worst weather we have seen in the DFW area, falling ice and some strange hissy fit with Prince we have made it. I had really hoped to get out and get to at least one party or see some of the sites but the weather has been so bad I have spent the last week at home. Anywhoo...there is just a few hours till the game and I want to wish both teams good luck. (go green bay!)
