New York moves to become 6th state to legalize gay marriage - CNN.com

It's about damn time!!!!! Happy Gay Pride weekend folks.

New York moves to become 6th state to legalize gay marriage - CNN.com

New York legislators cleared the last major hurdle to legalize same-sex marriage on Friday with a 33-to-29 vote, sending the bill to the governor's desk for his expected approval.
A vote on the measure, which the state Assembly passed June 15, has been stalled in the Senate. But it turned a corner Friday, according to Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, after lawmakers agreed on an amendment to protect religious groups from litigation that had been pushed by Republicans.
Earlier in the day, the Assembly passed a new version of the bill that included the amendment about religious institutions. The Friday night vote in the Senate means that the legislation's fate is now in the hands of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who proposed it in the first place.
Cuomo, a Democrat, says it would grant same-sex couples equal rights to marry "as well as hundreds of rights, benefits and protections that are currently limited to married couples of the opposite sex."
Currently, five states -- Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire -- and the District of Columbia grant same-sex marriage licenses.

Currently Watching - The Natural (1984)

This is another one of those movies that I have never seen but always hear so many good things about it. I never thought I would like it because I am not a fan of baseball or baseball movies or sport movies for that matter. When I started watching it I wondered how long I would make it till I was ready to turn it off and it was really, pretty soon. However, it was not because the movie was bad it was because it had one of my all time least favorite actresses ruining it for me. Barbara Hershey has to be the most overrated actress ever. I don't know how she got so many good movie rolls. She sounds like she just reads her lines and on top of that she is one of the most unattractive women to appear on the silver screen. That being said, she is only in the very beginning of the movie and thank god the wonderful Glen Close makes up for any bad taste that that nasty Hershey bar left in my mouth. Once I got past the beginning I really got into it. Robert Redford is fantastic as always playing basically the same person that he did in most of his movies which is a version of himself. At the end I was routing for him and was totally into the game. I can see why it has become an iconic sport film.

RIP Peter Falk. Oh sir! Just one more thing.

Peter Falk, ‘Columbo’ Actor, Dies at 83 - NYTimes.com

Peter Falk, who marshaled actorly tics, prop room appurtenances and his own physical idiosyncrasies to personify Columbo, one of the most famous and beloved fictional detectives in television history, died on Thursday night at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 83.
His family announced his death in a statement, The Associated Press reported. He had been treated for Alzheimer’s disease in recent years.
Mr. Falk had a wide-ranging career in comedy and drama, in the movies and onstage, before and during the three-and-a-half decades in which he portrayed the slovenly but canny lead on “Columbo.” He was nominated for two Oscars; appeared in original stage productions of works by Paddy Chayefsky, Neil Simon and Arthur Miller, worked with the directors Frank Capra, John Cassavetes, Blake Edwards and Mike Nichols, and co-starred with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Bette Davis and Jason Robards.

Naked Cowboy Robert Burck Will Marry Gay Couples in Times Square for Free

Ever-ready for publicity, the Naked Cowboy, Robert Burck, has thrown his support behind the movement for marriage equality in New York and declared July 3rd "Gay Marriage Day." To celebrate the holiday, Burck, who happens to be an ordained minister, will be performing free same-sex wedding ceremonies in Times Square all day on Sunday, July 3 -- and every July 3 that follows. Via press release, he said "I'm not a homosexual or a hypocrite, I am an American. It is hypocritical, in my opinion, for our legislature to discriminate against gays and lesbians regarding same-sex marriages. Gay & Lesbian Americans should be provided the same freedom and equal rights as heterosexuals allowing them to be legally wed if they so desire, and it should be regarded as 'moral' for anyone to be willing to commit to a monogamous relationship bound in holy matrimony."

Transgender Woman Wants Drag Performers Banned From Gay Pride - Insensitve Or Is Politically Correct Going Too Far?

OK...This shit just pisses me off!!! Gay pride without drag queens is like the Republican National Convention without prostitutes. They are what keeps it fun!

Rose White, a  transgendered woman in the town of Halifax-Calderone Nova Scotia has called has written to councillors and the organizers of Calder-dale Pride in Halifax Nova Scotia asking them to ban or publish a disclaimer about "drag" acts because it promotes negative stereotypes about transsexuals and encourages hatred of those who have changed sex
According to White:

“Drag queens – homosexuals dressed as women – and drag kings, women dressed as men, performing as stereotypical crossdressers promote, foster and reinforce the belief among the audience that any bloke in a frock must be a homosexual.  The council needs to prevent anything that reinforces out-of-date stereotyping.  If these people are allowed to perform in the town in the Pride, they must have a prominent sign stating ‘We are homosexual men – not transexuals’.

Happy Summer Solstice!

The summer solstice occurs exactly when the Earth's and the moon axial tilt is most inclined towards the sun at its maximum of 23° 26'. Though the summer solstice is an instant in time, the term is also colloquially used like Midsummer to refer to the day on which it occurs. Except in the polar regions (where daylight is continuous for many months during the spring and summer), the day on which the summer solstice occurs is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight. Thus the seasonal significance of the Summer solstice is in the reversal of the gradual shortening of nights and lengthening of days. The summer solstice occurs in June in the Northern Hemisphere and in December in the Southern Hemisphere south of the Tropic of Cancer (23°26'N) and south of the Tropic of Capricorn (23°26'S), the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky on the day of the summer solstice. However, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, the highest sun position does not occur at the summer solstice, since the sun reaches the zenith here and it does so at different times of the year depending on the latitude of the observer. Depending on the shift of the calendar, the summer solstice occurs some time between December 21 and December 22 each year in the Southern Hemisphere, and between June 20 and June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere.

Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures have held a recognition of sign of the fertility, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.

The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).

Now that we have learned something we can enjoy these hot summer guys!
