Tony Award Nominations Announced

Nominees for the 63rd annual Tony Awards were announced in New York City on Tuesday morning. Billy Elliot: The Musical led the pack with 15 nominations, including for best musical, followed by Next to Normal, which received 11 nominations, including a best musical nod.

Shrek the Musical and Rock of Ages rounded out the best musical category. The nominees for best play included Dividing the Estate, God of Carnage, Reasons to be Pretty, and 33 Variations.

Performances in God of Carnage and Mary Stuart dominated the nominations for best lead acting in a play, while Jane Fonda was also nominated for her work in 33 Variations. In musicals, Stockard Channing was recognized for her leading role in Pal Joey, and Allison Janney scored for 9 to 5. David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik, and Kiril Kulish were nominated for Billy Elliot, and Gavin Creel made the cut for his work in Hair.

Among the productions snubbed were Hedda Gabler and The Seagull, which received no nominations, and 9 to 5, which did not earn a nomination in the best musical category.

The Tony Award winners will be announced on June 7 on CBS.
