The 2009 State Fair of Texas

Bart and I had a great time yesterday at the Texas State Fair. Between the two of us we had corny dogs, fried pickles, fried bacon, fried cheesecake and a fried Snickers. Is it any wonder we had terrible dreams last night? I am so happy they have finished the DART green line to the fairgrounds. It was so much easier taking the train.

SMU Hunks

Driving around today I saw that SMU was having a car wash. Glad I keep my camera with me.

Dallas Block Party

Here are my photos from the Late Night Block Party in the Dallas Arts District. You could get into the Dallas Museum of Art, the Crow Collection of Asian Art and Nasher Sculpture Center, all for free. The weather was perfect for it so I took a stroll downtown as well. I had so much fun!

Thursday, August 20, 2009

I was in downtown Dallas yesterday and had wanted to see the Spirit of Communication statue at the AT&T Headquarters for some time, so I decided to checked it out. If you are in the area make the effort to see it. It is just beautiful! You w...ill also see two of my favorite buildings in Dallas, The Magnolia and The Adolphus. Both were built at the beginning of the 20th century and are a glimpse into Dallas history. I also happened upon the old Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and ended up at City Hall. I hope you enjoy the slide show I put together.

International Drag Day

Happy Drag Day everyone!

What? You have never heard of it? Well, neither had I.

Here is the info I got from Wikipedia.
The first ever International Drag Day was held on July 16th 2009.
The man behind the holiday is Adam Stewart, who created the event because he "saw that there was no such day or event on an international platform in which we celebrated drag artists"
He launched the event via his Fan page for Drag Queens on facebook in which it gained significant interest
Guidetogay.com became to official media partner allowing the event to reach ha far greater audience, especially in Australia where the Stonewall Hotel held a big event for the day.

So, in honor of Drag Day, here are some of my favorites.

And then there is me...Miss Bethany Holmes

Comedy star Mollie Sugden has died

I was never a big fan of "Are You Being Served" but I always thought she was a cute character.

Comedy actress Mollie Sugden has died in hospital following a long illness, aged 86.

The Yorkshire-born star of popular sitcom Are You Being Served? died in the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford on Wednesday afternoon.

Frank Thornton, who played Captain Peacock in the BBC comedy, said: "Mollie, of course, was an excellent comedian. She was a jolly good actress."

Of their on-screen chemistry in the long-running BBC sitcom, he said: "You can't play comedy if you don't get on. It was a wonderful team."

Sugden's twin sons, Robin and Simon Moore, were at her bedside, according to her agent Joan Reddin.

Ms Reddin began representing Sugden in the 1960s before she became famous with her role as Mrs Slocombe.

She said: "She had had a long illness and various problems but it was very quick in the end. Her twin boys were with her and she faded away. She was a lovely, lovely person."

Sugden, who lived in Surrey, was married to fellow actor William Moore. She never fully recovered from his death nine years ago, said Ms Reddin. "They were very much in love," she said. "She started to go down when he died."

Best known for her comedy roles often playing battleaxes, Sugden also appeared as the fearsome Mrs Hutchinson in The Liver Birds, but her career spanned a variety of roles.

Born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, in July 1922, Sugden trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Her early career was spent in repertory theatre, where in Swansea in 1956, she met Moore. They married two years later, when she was 35 and he was 39. Their sons were born six years later.

Fort Worth police better start clarifying gay bar 'check'
12:00 AM CDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2009

The Fort Worth Police Department still has some explaining to do about what happened early Sunday at a southside gay bar called the Rainbow Lounge.

Or some clarifying or some illuminating or some supplementary detailing – anything to mitigate the apparently self-administered public-relations shot-to-the-foot it suffered after what it keeps calling a routine "bar check."

'Cause – Problem No. 1 – bar patrons who were there say it wasn't a "check," it was a "raid." Problem No. 2, this particular "check" ended with a kid in the intensive-care unit with a head injury.

Problem No. 3, in what I can only hope is a spectacularly infelicitous coincidence, all this took place on the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Raid.

The landmark date marks a 1969 clash between New York City police and club patrons, widely viewed as the catalyst for the modern American gay-rights movement.

The short version is this: About 1 a.m. Sunday, two Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents and six FWPD cops showed up at the club for an inspection.

These checks, which have gotten a lot of attention in the last few years, target bars in search of patrons who are obviously intoxicated.

Well, I'm certainly willing to believe it is possible to find a drunk in a bar at 1 a.m. The TABC carries these out with an eye to curbing public intoxication and drunken driving, as well as reminding bartenders that it is illegal to serve somebody who is already loaded.

At this point, however, accounts between patrons and police diverge.

Police Chief Jeff Halstead has said only that there will be a thorough investigation.

But in an earlier official statement, police said they encountered hostile, argumentative drunks, some of whom "made sexually explicit movements" (my imagination runs wild) toward the officers. One young patron allegedly "assaulted [a] TABC agent by grabbing the TABC agent's groin."

OK, hold on. First, witnesses say the officers showed up ready to make arrests, their fists full of plastic zip-cuffs.

"They were hyped up. They were loaded for bear," said Todd Camp, a veteran journalist who was there celebrating his birthday with friends. "They were just randomly grabbing people, telling them they were drunk."

Camp told me he has been in bars during TABC/police "checks" before, "and it was never anything like this." Usually, he said, officers discreetly walk through, looking for anybody who has had too much. This was different.

"They were shoving patrons," Camp said, "asking, 'How much have you had to drink?' "

Maybe you can call that a difference in perception, a disagreement over the degree of aggressiveness on both sides.

But there are flat contradictions about how Chad Gibson was injured. The Dallas Voice reported Monday that Gibson is hospitalized with bleeding around his brain.

"He was taken down hard," said Camp, with "four or five" officers wrestling him to the floor inside the club.

Cellphone photos shot by patrons and posted to blogs show a person being held facedown by officers in a short hallway inside the club, then show a dent in the wall where his head was apparently banged.

But a Fort Worth police spokesman told me Gibson was injured outside, when he fell and struck his head because he was so drunk.

"He was the one that groped the TABC agent," said Sgt. Pedro Criado. "He was injured by falling and hitting his head."

When I asked Sgt. Criado how he identified Gibson as the "groper," he said he was reading from a police report filed by cops on the scene. I asked for further details, but he said I'd have to file a Freedom of Information request.

"The truth will come out. We don't want to make any assumptions," he said. "We got to gather all the facts."

What Camp says, and what other people who claim to have been there say in comments posted to news stories, is that they were scared.

"I hate to say I was afraid of my own police department, but I was," Camp said.

His description of frightened, distraught patrons just does not seem to square with police accounts of being subjected to a drunken, groin-grabbing gantlet during a routine "bar inspection."

Fort Worth is a fine and tolerant city. The police officers I personally know over there are decent, stand-up people. But today, in the Twitter-and-blog-enabled process of rapid dissemination, they're getting an ugly reputation.

And the flames of indiscriminate opinion about Texas being a stagnant backwater of vicious, insular, hate-crazed xenophobes dance higher.

So, Fort Worth, we need some answers, please, and quickly.

This is no time to stonewall.

Jesus Christ!!!!

Last week I went to Amarillo to visit my mother and help her with some chores around the house. I have several pics of Amarillo and my stop in Oklahoma City but they will not appear in this blog. What I am going go show you needed a blog all it's own.
I give you....The Jesus Christ is Lord Travel Center.

This is the first thing you see when you drive in to Amarillo going westbound on I-40. The last time I saw it, it was just a regular truck stop. I kind of wanted to go inside but I was afraid I would never be seen again.

Gay Man Not Welcome In Graveyard And Exhumed Twice

Gay Man Not Welcome In Graveyard And Exhumed Twice

Homophobia is a worldwide phenomenon. Each day new incidents occur that help to maintain heterosexual privilege. From discrimination in employment, housing, health care and acts of violence, heterosexuals consciously act to ensure that lesbians and gays are treated as less than. The citizens of a small village in Senegal acted in what must be considered one of the cruellest fashions to ensure that even in death gays and lesbians are not welcome.

In the village of Thies a man who was presumed to be gay died of natural causes in a hospital. Just hours after he was buried in a Muslim cemetery four men had his body exhumed his body, leaving it near his grave. The police were forced to intervene and the body was reburied. Not wishing to be stymied in their efforts the man was once again exhumed and this time his body was dumped in front of his family home.

The level of hatred and ignorance it takes to exhume a dead man is incredible. How does his presence in a graveyard cause damage to anyone else? According to Article 319, paragraph 3 of the Senegal Penal Code homosexuality is illegal. It states, “whoever commits an impure act or an unnatural act with another person of the same sex” risks “a five year prison term” and a fine between 100,000 F CFA and 1,000,000 F CFA (i.e. between 150 and 1500 euros). I am quite sure that this man is not the first person to have been guilty of breaking a law to be buried in this cemetery.

"The life of a homosexual man in Senegal is difficult because he is always forced to hide his identity, his needs," said Serif, a 28-year-old outreach worker who is gay. "He lives in perpetual fear, in hiding from his family, his colleagues, even health centers. If I were to make known that I am homosexual, I risk being physically attacked. It has already happened."

Gor-digen are a group of men who dress in women's clothes and perform female gender norms. They have been a part of Senegalese society for a long time. In the 1930’s French anthropologists observed what they called men-women in the Wolof tribe. Muslims have repeatedly refused them religious burial, however that should not extend to lying in the same cemetery. There are those that profess that a gay or lesbian identity is not African and is a result of colonialist oppression, however as long as humans have walked the face of the continent there have been those that are gay, lesbian, and two-spirited. Rather than concerning themselves with what is not African, they should be concerning themselves with what is human. Every person deserves to be laid to rest with dignity.

Maine legalizes same-sex marriage

Maine legalizes same-sex marriage

(CNN) -- Same-sex marriage became legal in Maine on Wednesday as Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill less than an hour after the state legislature approved it.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill Wednesday legalizing same-sex marriage.

Maine Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill Wednesday legalizing same-sex marriage.

"I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage," said Baldacci, a Democrat.

But he raised the possibility that the residents of the state would overturn the law, saying, "Just as the Maine Constitution demands that all people are treated equally under the law, it also guarantees that the ultimate political power in the State belongs to the people."

Three other states -- Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa -- allow same-sex marriages. Vermont has passed a law making gay and lesbian marriages legal that takes effect in September. New Hampshire lawmakers are close to passing a similar bill.

On Tuesday, the Washington City Council voted to recognize same-sex marriages from states that allow those unions. Mayor Adrian Fenty has indicated that he will sign the measure. It will become law if Congress fails to overturn the measure during a 30-day review period.

A slim majority of Americans are against legal recognition for same-sex marriage, CNN polling found last month.

Fifty-four percent of adults questioned in an April 23-26 nationwide CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll said that marriages between gay or lesbian couples should not be recognized as valid, while 44 percent said they should be considered legal.

The survey's sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Food for thought.

As of 6 p.m. GMT on May 4, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed 1,085 cases of swine flu in 21 countries worldwide with 26 confirmed deaths, and reports seem to show the illness is leveling off. For now at least.

By the end of 1981, just 7 months after the first press report mentioning a rare disease in gay men, at least 121 people died from what would become known as Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

Just days after the swine flu outbreak was confirmed, the entire world knew of this new disease that jumped from pigs to humans, by statements from the leaders of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, WHO and President Barack Obama.

Six years after the first reports of AIDS, President Ronald Reagan finally publicly said the word AIDS and acknowledged it was an issue. By that time, nearly 21,000 people had died from the disease, while a total of 50,000 people in 113 countries lived with AIDS.

Today, more than 25 million people have died and, according to conservative estimates, 40 million people are living with HIV/AIDS around the world, many of whom do not have access to the life-saving anti-retroviral drugs.

What would've come of AIDS had our president talked about it and sounded alarms in early 1981 instead of ignoring a disease that presumably only affected gay men? It's possible that AIDS could have been contained. But because it was "nature's revenge on gay men," according to Reagan's then communication's director Pat Buchanan, it was swept under the rug and silenced.

The world is reacting to the news of swine flu and paying attention. It's no different than when seven people in the Chicago area died in 1982 from taking cyanide-laced Extra Strength Tylenol and Johnson & Johnson, which produced the pain reliever, recalled an estimated 31 million bottles. This happened one week after the first death. Imagine if authorities hadn't made the connection how many more people may have died?

When authorities made the connection that gay men and intravenous drug users contracted and died from this strange disease, conservatism and "religious moral values" played a large role in our national politics and they didn't care that "deviants" were dying. The Rev. Jerry Falwell said "AIDS is the wrath of God upon homosexuals."

Would anyone have paid attention to swine flu if only an "undesireable subgroup" was getting sick? I would hope so. Today, we have a government in place that shows compassion for all Americans (and presumably all human life), at least where health is concerned. It's a sad legacy that Reagan left behind regarding AIDS. Millions of people might have be spared if he had acted, instead of remaining silent while his hatred for a group of his citizens lay suffering and dying.

Dom DeLuise dies at 75

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Dom DeLuise, who spiced up such movies as "Blazing Saddles," "Silent Movie" and "The Cannonball Run" with his manic delivery and roly-poly persona, has died, his son's publicist told CNN.

Dom DeLuise was best known for his roles in Mel Brooks films as well as films with his friend Burt Reynolds.

Dom DeLuise was best known for his roles in Mel Brooks films as well as films with his friend Burt Reynolds.

Publicist Jay Schwartz did not disclose the cause of death, but DeLuise, 75, had been battling cancer for more than a year.

DeLuise was surrounded by family when he died in a Santa Monica, California, hospital Monday night, son Michael DeLuise told CNN affiliate KTLA-TV.

DeLuise was most famous for his supporting roles in a number of Mel Brooks films, including 1974's "Saddles" -- in which he played a flamboyant musical director who led dancers in a number called "The French Mistake" -- and 1976's "Silent Movie," in which he played the assistant to Brooks' director Mel Funn. He was also in the Brooks-directed "The Twelve Chairs" (1970), "Spaceballs" (1987) and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993).

But he could also assay more serious roles, most notably in the 1980 dark comedy "Fatso," in which he played an overweight man trying to wean himself from comfort food. The film was directed by Brooks' wife, Anne Bancroft.

DeLuise was also part of the supporting cast in the Burt Reynolds crash-'em-up vehicles "Smokey and the Bandit II" (1980), "Cannonball Run" (1981) and "Cannonball Run II" (1984). Other DeLuise films include "The End" (1978), "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982) and "Johnny Dangerously" (1984).

His voice was featured in such films as "An American Tail" (1986) and its sequels, "All Dogs Go to Heaven" (1989) and its 1996 sequel, and "Oliver & Company" (1988).

Dominic DeLuise was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 1, 1933. In the 1960s he had bit parts in a handful of movies, including "Fail Safe" (1964), but became well known as a regular on "The Entertainers" and a Dean Martin variety show. He had his own summer replacement show in 1968 and was a regular on Glen Campbell's "Goodtime Hour" in 1971-72.

DeLuise had three sons -- Peter, Michael and David -- who all became actors.

His wife of 40 years, actress Carol Arthur, appeared in several movies with him, including "Blazing Saddles" and "Silent Movie," according to DeLuise's Web site.A frequent collaborator with DeLuise, Burt Reynolds released a statement to "Entertainment Tonight" on his friend's death.

"I was thinking the other day about this. As you get older you think about this more and more, I was dreading this moment. Dom always made everyone feel better when he was around. I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone. I will miss him very much," Reynolds says.

Fuck you very much!

Swine Flu Outbreak: Miss Piggy Detained at U.S./Mexico Border

Swine Flu Outbreak: Miss Piggy Detained at U.S./Mexico Border

Noted entertainer Miss Piggy has been refused reentry into the United States as she attempted to return from a two week tour of nightclubs in Mexico City and Guadalajara. Following a deadly outbreak of swine flu in Mexico, border officers are under strict orders to turn away any boars or hogs coming over from the South without exception.

Public health concerns aside, the former Muppet Show star is furious. Through her spokesperson, she issued a formal complaint against the United States Border Patrol on Saturday, noting that beloved film actor Babe had been allowed to cross just the day before after a week-long bender in Tijuana. Fearing a public relations debacle, officials on both sides of the Rio Grande clarified that the order had not come down until shortly before Piggy's arrival. The explanation came with a personal note from Mexican President Felipe Calderon's asking her forgiveness for her continued treatment and to remind her that his proposal of marriage is still on the table.

According to some reports, border agents allowed her long-time boyfriend, a green bug-eyed frog, to cross into the United States, leaving Piggy abandoned at the roadside checkpoint as the lanky amphibian rode off on a remarkably realistic-looking bicycle. The incident, she says, is her most humiliating experience since losing the "best actress" Oscar to Sally Field in 1979.

Piggy will here remain in this holding facility until blood tests prove that she is not infected with, nor a carrier for, swine flu- a process that could take a couple of days or, considering the relative speed of the federal government, a couple of weeks. In the meantime, Piggy has asked her friend Janice and guest star Willie Nelson to water her plants until she gets back.

Piggy's AWOL boyfriend could not be reached for comment.

Sam the Eagle, a regular contributor to Fox News, tore into his former co-worker on the Sean Hannity program. When to comment on Piggy's confinement, Eagle doubted Piggy's patriotism, openly wondering what was she doing in Mexico in the first place when there are perfectly good nightclub venues right here in the U S of A. He went on to argue that, with more than a dozen assault charges on her record resulting from her notorious temper, Piggy should not be allowed to return even after she is medically cleared to do so.

"First they took our jobs," huffed Eagle. "Now with the help of lefty pinkos like Miss Piggy, they're exporting our diseases to Mexico, too! And Obama's CDC is just standing aside and letting it happen!"

Stressed? Run around campus in your underwear

Term papers. Final exams. Campus life is intense, especially this time of year with the end of the semester mere days away.

Dozens of students have decided that streaking through the University of Texas campus in their underwear is just the thing to let off some steam.

On Friday, May 8, the second annual Undie Run will start from a secret location on campus. Weston Carls, 23, and Dan Stone, publisher of Study Breaks magazine, organized the charity run this year. (Carls said he borrowed the idea from some California campuses.)

UndieRun.jpg

The mile-long run will start after 8 p.m.

Why streak, we asked.

“For stress relief,” Carls said.

Students will show up overdressed in layers of clothes that will be donated to charities such as the Trinity Center, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and LifeWorks. Sororities and other organizations will collect the clothes. Students donated 1,400 articles of clothing at last year’s Undie Run, Carls said.

The event caused a bit of a stir last year when unsuspecting students called campus police to report that there were students running around in their underwear outside of the library.

The event is expected to end around 10:30 p.m. There will be music — “Two bands will be playing for free … in their underwear, which is cool,” Stone said — and prizes, including one for the person who donates the most clothing. Last year, that prize went to a woman wearing 47 articles of clothing.

“She showed up with eight shirts, and we had to help her pull them off,” Carls said.

Organizers have purchased 500 backpacks to hand out to students who might not want to run around campus holding cell phones, a change of clothes and car keys.

Students who want to participate in the Undie Run can text 11SBVIP to 64842.

Art in Dallas

Bart and I were in the Dallas Design District and just happened across this statue...

Bart noticed it first...So I had to turn around and take a peak.

It is amazing what you find when you are just driving around.
